Dr Robb

New Music From The North Country

Biography image
I've been in the music biz for a long time. I was born and raised in a little town called Madison SD. I started out playing in a string of rock bands, then spent some time doing studio work in the Twin Cities area playing drums. After that, did some time messing around with gospel and celtic music. Did the coffee house circuit solo or with various other players for many years and prepandemic, singing and playing acoustic guitar,  I had a little band doing an assortment of covers from many genres with pedal steel, and drums. I released several Americana CDs over the past 15 years. After playing the Big Turn Music Festival in Red Wing,  the pandemic caused us to suspend all gigs, so I took the opportunity to create some new music for the next CD which is a completely different direction. While still Americana influenced here and there, it's a blend of genres from electronic dance to psychedelic rock to folk, spoken word, R and B, and other seemingly incongruous elements. Drums (played by me) are out front with a strong rhythm section.  Also, to separate myself from all the other musicians named Robert Coates, changed the stage name to Dr Robb (Yes, I'm a real Dr. ). Currently doing live shows with my side man Craig Wronsky (steel and 6 string electric).

Pandemic CD Project: "Winter @ 38th St" Written and Recorded During the lockdown

My unusual (for me), recorded during the pandemic lockdown CD project, recorded and mixed here at the studio you see in the background. Melotron, samples, synth, acoustic guitar, drums, spoken word. Very danceable. Hear a few of the songs above. Mastered by Bob Ohlsson (of Motown fame).

"Your CD sounds really good! Your vox are strong – which is one of the hardest things for most ‘local’ artists to pull off"...Jim McGuinn, program director for The Current (MN Public Radio)

Unusual, unexpected, surprising, delightful…there are common descriptors for Raab’s song choices and performances.
